Legal Pot in California

While looking for an article to blog about I found interesting and controversial opinions by the author of the article on CNN.com, "Legal pot in California, a big mistake". Although the debate over the legalization of marijuana will not reach the Midwest for quite some time, California is closer than almost all other states. In his article, Ruben Navarrette Jr makes ridiculous comparisons when discussing the legalization of marijuana. People who have similar opinions about the legalization of marijuana are the people who perpetuate the ideas of this drug being so harmful to our nation. Navarrette claims that legalizing marijuana would have similar effects to legalizing prostitution and identity left. Individuals who put such an awful stigma on marijuana are the people at fault. In Europe where laws are much more lenient and the age of drinking alcohol is lower, much less of the European youth smoke marijuana or "binge" drink like the youth in the United States. I believe that legalizing marijuana in a state that has a high population such as California could only be beneficial especially with the state being on the boarder of Mexico. The writer of this article disregards that the legalization of marijuana would shut down the business of drug cartels which I find foolish. If California legalizes marijuana it will clear the prisons of small offenders, make the idea of smoking weed not as appealing to the young generation and stop illegal drug smuggling and possibly slow down illegal immigration.
